Best Cheap Hotels in Cancun
Yes, staying in Cancun cheap is possible if you follow some tips and tricks:
- Travel in the low season months of Cancun: avoid traveling in high season, which are July, December and January. If you travel in low season, you’ll pay cheaper.
- Pay in local currency and avoid card payments: Use ATMs to withdraw pesos or exchange money at reputable places, and avoid paying with credit cards or US dollars, as you will get a worse exchange rate and pay extra fees
- Book a hotel in downtown rather than the Hotel Zone: you can find cheaper accommodation options in downtown Cancun. Although one great exception is the Mayan Monkey Cancun😉
- Explore the tourist spots on your own: Instead of joining an expensive tour, you can visit the nearby Mayan ruins, cenotes, islands and museums on your own. There are also some very good cheap tours to Chichen Itza or Tulum and Coba.
- Take advantage of Cancun’s bus system: the bus is the cheapest and easiest way to get around Cancun. It runs regularly and covers most of the city. You can also take a ferry to visit nearby islands like Isla Mujeres or Cozumel.
Here is my selection of the best cheap hotels in Cancun:

This is a great choice for backpackers and party lovers who want to enjoy Cancun’s nightlife!
- Nomads Party Hotel & Hostel: Located in downtown Cancun, this vibrant hostel offers dorms and private rooms with air conditioning and shared bathrooms. From 23 $usd per night for a dorm.
