Morning: Dive into the Heart of Vallarta
Begin your day with a refreshing walk along the Malecon.
This iconic seafront promenade is not just a path beside the ocean; it’s a gallery of open-air sculptures featuring works by renowned artists like Alejandro Colunga with his “La Rotonda del Mar” chairs, and Sergio Bustamante‘s famous “En Busca de la Razon”.
Visit the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the city’s most beloved landmark. Established in the early 20th century, this church is famous for its crown-topped tower, a replica of a crown worn by Carlota, the empress of Mexico in the 1860s.
Its presence close to the Plaza de Armas makes it a central figure in local celebrations and a symbol of Puerto Vallarta.
Cap off your morning with a visit to Casa Kimberly, the former residence of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
This mansion, nestled atop a charming climb on Calle Zaragoza, holds deep Hollywood history.
Burton bought the house for Taylor while he was filming “The Night of the Iguana” (1964) a project that brought significant attention to Puerto Vallarta. Their much-publicized affair began on the set of “Cleopatra” and continued flamboyantly in Vallarta.
Today, Casa Kimberly functions as a boutique hotel and restaurant, so general access is limited. However, you can take a photo with the statue of the two lovers at the entrance.
Midday: Explore the Charm of Old Vallarta
For those looking for a panoramic city view, take a walk to Faro de Matamoros.
Built in 1932, this lighthouse guided ships into the bay with a bright welcoming light for over 40 years until it ceased operation in 1978. Today, it offers a peaceful place to look over the busy city and calm sea, providing a quiet break from the more crowded tourist areas.
Or you can head directly to Gringo Gulch, a historic neighborhood that captures a unique mix of traditional Mexican architecture and influences from American and Canadian expatriates.
This area is known for its narrow, cobblestone streets and beautifully restored homes that date back to the 1950s and 1960s.
These structures, while modern in their time of construction, often reflect traditional styles and became a hub for artists and writers, contributing significantly to Vallarta’s cultural development.
Pass through the Iguana Bridge and enjoy amazing views of the mountains, Isla Del Río Cuale and Old Vallarta.
Afternoon: Savor the Local Flavors and Discover Hidden Gems
Continue your adventure by crossing the bridge from the charming Gringo Gulch area to Isla Cuale.
This scenic walk takes you right into the heart of Puerto Vallarta and leads to a serene river island, positioned centrally just a bridge away from the bustling city.
Isla Cuale is a quaint spot that offers a respite from the urban pace and features a vibrant handicraft market. Wander among the stalls to discover handmade jewelry, traditional Mexican textiles, and unique artisanal crafts—ideal for finding unique gifts while supporting local artisans.
Just a short stroll from Isla Cuale, make your way to the Romantic Zone via Avenida Constitución or Carretera 200. This area is the cultural heartbeat of Vallarta, celebrated for its lively nightlife, picturesque streets, and the inviting warmth of its residents.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Cervecería Los Muertos in the Romantic Zone, a top spot for craft beer enthusiasts. Try a pint of Anillo de Fuego, a bold brew with a spicy kick of chili. I also recommend the Cuale Gold for its smooth, full-bodied flavor.
If you’re not into alcohol, you can skip the brewery and go straight to Sabores Helados, a small local shop I consider the best ice cream spot in Vallarta. Known for its very friendly owners and amazing flavors, it’s a perfect way to treat yourself after exploring the Romantic Zone.
Late Afternoon to Evening: Relax and Enjoy the Vibrant Beach Life
As the afternoon fades into evening, make your way to Olas Altas Beach for a relaxed end to your day. This popular beach is perfect for soaking up the last rays of the sun and enjoying the soft sand between your toes.
Continue your stroll along the shoreline to the iconic Playa Los Muertos Pier. This modern pier is not just a place to admire the ocean; it’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists to gather and watch the stunning sunsets that Puerto Vallarta is known for.
The architecture of the pier, with its soaring sails and graceful curves, makes it a photogenic landmark against the evening sky.
End your day at Los Muertos Beach, right next to the pier, where a lively mix of local families and beach clubs fills the air with music. Here, you can enjoy a cocktail or join in the dance at one of the beachside bars.
As the sun sets, the beach is the perfect place to witness the breathtaking colors of the sky as they change from bright blues to the fiery hues of sunset. It’s the perfect conclusion to a fully packed one day in Puerto Vallarta.

My Best Tips for Visiting Puerto Vallarta in One Day
To make the most out of your 1-day visit to Puerto Vallarta, here are some essential tips:
- Puerto Vallarta 1-Day Tour: If you’re short on time but want to catch a panoramic view of the city, hop on the double decker bus tour. It’s an excellent way to see the highlights of Puerto Vallarta quickly and enjoyably – Get your bus tickets here!
- Start Early: Kick off your day as early as possible to enjoy the sights before the crowds arrive and to fully utilize your time.
- Sun Protection: The sun in Puerto Vallarta can be strong. Don’t forget your sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself throughout the day.
- Wear Comfortable Shoes: Good walking shoes are crucial. You’ll be navigating a lot of walking, some on cobblestone streets, which can be quite uneven.
- Stay Hydrated: Always carry a water bottle, especially during the hot months, as staying hydrated is key while exploring. Additionally, you can enjoy a refreshing glass of tuba on the Malecon. This local drink is made from the fermented sap of the coconut palm, mixed with water and sugar, and served with apple pieces and plenty of ice cubes for a refreshing and unique taste. 🥵
Is Spending Just One Day in Puerto Vallarta Enough?
While spending just one day in Puerto Vallarta offers a glimpse into its vibrant culture and stunning landscapes, it’s barely enough to scratch the surface.
Many visitors spend from a week to several months a year in the city, finding plenty to keep them entertained without ever getting bored!
If you have the opportunity to extend your stay, you absolutely must explore the beautiful and secluded southern beaches like Colomitos, Las Animas, Quimixto, Majahuitas, and Yelapa, which are primarily accessible by boat. These beaches are perfect for a day trip to enjoy the pristine sands and clear waters.
You can book the boat tour to the beaches here:
If you spend more time in Puerto Vallarta, consider exploring beyond the central zones into neighborhoods like Marina Vallarta or the district of Versalles for a deeper insight into local life.
Dive into activities like a snorkeling trip to Islas Marietas (click here to book!), relaxing at Las Caletas private beach or taking a jungle tour, and align your visit with local events and festivals for a unique glimpse into Vallarta’s traditions.
Also, take the opportunity to savor the rich and varied culinary scene, from street food tours 🌮 (book the best one here!) to gourmet dining experiences.
Extending your stay allows you to immerse yourself more deeply in Puerto Vallarta’s beauty and charm, making your visit truly unforgettable.
