You’re at the right place!

To help you plan your stay, I’ve created this 3-day itinerary in San Miguel de Allende. It’s designed to cover the must-see attractions in the historic center while also taking you beyond the city to explore some of its best activities.

You’ll visit highlights like El Charco del Ingenio, the La Cañada de la Virgen Pyramid, and even enjoy options like horseback riding through the canyon or a vineyard tour.

And with three days, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the nearby traditional towns of Atotonilco and Dolores Hidalgo, where history and local culture thrive.

In this detailed day-by-day plan, you’ll find the top things to do and unique experiences that truly capture the spirit of San Miguel. I’ll also share my best tips to help you make the most of your visit.

And, of course, I’ll recommend the best places to stay and some lovely spots to eat, so you can fully enjoy your time in this beautiful city.

So, What are the best things to do in San Miguel de Allende in 3 days? Where to stay?

Let’s find out!

Day 1: Discover the heart of San Miguel de Allende

Morning – Explore San Miguel’s Historic Center

Start your 3-day visit in San Miguel de Allende at Jardín Allende, the lively main square.

From here, you’ll have a perfect view of the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, with its striking pink facade. Take a few moments to walk around and take it all in—this is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, and it’s definitely worth seeing up close.

The entire historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its well-preserved colonial architecture and rich cultural significance. As you explore, you’ll notice how the city has kept its charm and authenticity, making it a must-see destination for history and culture enthusiasts.

Next, head over to the Casa de Allende Museum. It’s a quick but informative stop where you’ll learn about the city’s role in Mexico’s independence and get a feel for the city’s history.

After that, explore some of the best art galleries in town, like Exim Galería, Casa Diana, and Arde Gallery to discover San Miguel’s creative side.

The best part is that everything in the historic center is close together, so you can comfortably walk from one attraction to the next while enjoying the cobblestone streets and colorful colonial buildings.

My Advice
For a deeper experience, consider hiring a local guide for a walking tour.

A guide will share fascinating insights about the city’s history, architecture, and culture that you might miss on your own. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to support the local community. Book your tour here:

Afternoon – Art and Nature in San Miguel

After your morning exploration of the historic center, you’ll likely be ready for a break.

There are plenty of excellent restaurants in San Miguel, but when it comes to lunch, I have a few personal favorites.

For a great brunch or light lunch, I highly recommend Lavanda Café. Their chilaquiles and coffee are top-notch, making it a perfect spot to recharge before heading out again.

Hecho en México is another great choice. It’s a beautiful restaurant filled with Mexican art and details.

You can’t miss the fish tacos, the side of puré de camote (sweet potato purée), and the starter, the huitlacoche fondue—it’s actually my favorite dish here, and I always make sure to order it!

If I’m in the mood for something more local, affordable, and tasty, I always go for tacos or a torta (Mexican sandwich) at Ignacio Ramírez Market. It’s hands down the best place to eat on a budget in San Miguel de Allende, with a variety of stalls offering delicious, authentic Mexican food.

Once you’re fueled up, you can choose between two excellent options for the afternoon:

1-Fábrica La Aurora, a former textile factory, is now home to numerous art galleries, talleres (studios), and design shops.

It’s the perfect place for art lovers to wander around. You’ll also find four restaurants and cafés, along with a wine-tasting room to relax after exploring. The industrial vibe and artistic energy make it a unique space to spend your afternoon.

2-Head to El Charco del Ingenio, a beautiful botanical garden and nature reserve, for a more nature-filled option

You can explore panoramic trails, viewpoints, and even sculptures scattered around the reserve. There’s also the Conservatory of Mexican Plants and some vestiges of historical structures that add to the charm of the area.

  • The best way to experience the reserve is through one of their guided tours, available in English every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 12 pm!

After your walk, relax at the café or browse the shop, where you’ll find plants, honey, and handicrafts made by local artisans, cooperatives, and women’s groups, all following sustainable and fair trade practices.

My Advice
Don’t forget to wear closed-toe shoes, bring a hat, and carry plenty of water for the walk!

Evening – Rooftop Drinks and Mezcal

To end your first day, enjoy some of the best views in San Miguel from Cielo Rooftop, where you can sip cocktails while overlooking the historic center.

Other great rooftop options include Antonia Bistro and La Azotea, both offering stunning views and delicious drinks.

If you’re in the mood for something more local, head to The Room Mezcalería to sample quality mezcal from small-batch producers, often accompanied by live music, making it the perfect end to your evening.

Day 2: Exploring San Miguel’s Surroundings

On your second day in San Miguel de Allende, you can choose from three fantastic options, each offering a unique experience.

Whether you’re into history, adventure, or wine, you’ll find something that suits your interests.

1. La Cañada de la Virgen Pyramid

For history enthusiasts, visiting the La Cañada de la Virgen Pyramid is a must.

Located about 30 minutes outside of San Miguel, this pre-Hispanic site was once used for astronomical and religious purposes by the Otomi people between 540 and 1050 AD.

As you explore the site, you’ll see sunken patios, squares, and esplanades, all while learning about the cultural and cosmological significance of the area.

The pyramid is only accessible through a guided tour, and I highly recommend one with an archaeologist guide for deeper insights into the history and architecture.

Book your tour here, that includes roundtrip transportation from San Miguel de Allende:

2. Adventure in the Canyon: Horseback Riding and Hiking

For those seeking a bit of adventure, Coyote Canyon offers two exciting ways to explore the rugged landscapes of San Miguel’s countryside: horseback riding or a 2.5-hour guided hike.

Both activities end with a delicious ranch-style meal, freshly prepared with local ingredients, including hand-made tortillas and organic produce. It’s the perfect way to refuel after an active day.

  • The horseback riding tour is a wonderful way to experience the canyon’s scenic trails, crossing rivers and walking through beautiful valleys.

It’s suitable for all skill levels, so even if you’re new to horseback riding, the guides will ensure you’re comfortable! Book the horseback riding tour here:

  • If you prefer hiking, the 2.5-hour guided hike is ideal for intermediate hikers.

Accompanied by a specialized guide, you’ll walk along the same trails used for horseback excursions. The path is moderately rugged, offering stunning views of the canyon’s dramatic scenery. Book the hike in the canyon here:

3. Vineyard Tour and Wine Tasting

If you’re a wine lover, exploring one of San Miguel’s local vineyards is an excellent way to spend your day.

The region has over 500 vineyards, producing both red and white wines, with a growing reputation for organic winemaking.

My personal favorite is Cuna de Tierra, where you’ll get to enjoy a wine-tasting experience paired with local cheeses and other delicacies. You’ll also have the opportunity to tour the vineyard, learn about the winemaking process, and stroll through the scenic landscape.

To immerse yourself in the local wine culture, I highly recommend joining a wine tasting tour. You’ll visit two top vineyards in San Miguel de Allende, where you can enjoy tastings paired with local cheeses and other organic products.

Day 3: Exploring Nearby Traditional Towns

For the final day of your three-day trip in San Miguel de Allende, venture out to explore some of the traditional towns nearby, each offering its own unique charm and history.

Two must-visit towns are Atotonilco and Dolores Hidalgo. Both are easy to reach and will provide a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural and historical significance.

1. Visit the Sanctuary of Atotonilco

Start your day by visiting Atotonilco, located about 20 minutes from San Miguel de Allende.

The highlight here is the Santuario de Jesús Nazareno, also called the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico.”

This UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its impressive murals and baroque architecture, depicting intricate religious scenes. The walls and ceilings are covered in stunning artwork that has been meticulously preserved over the centuries.

Atotonilco played a key role in Mexico’s history as it was here that Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla took the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe to inspire the Mexican independence movement.

As you walk through the sanctuary, take your time to appreciate the detailed frescoes.

2. Explore Dolores Hidalgo

Next, head to Dolores Hidalgo, located a short drive from Atotonilco.

Known as the cradle of Mexico’s independence, this town is where Father Miguel Hidalgo delivered the famous “Cry of Dolores“, which sparked the country’s fight for independence in 1810.

Dolores Hidalgo is also famous for its ceramics. As you explore the town, you’ll find numerous workshops and stores selling beautifully crafted tiles, dishes, and decorative items. It’s a perfect place to pick up a unique souvenir or simply admire the craftsmanship.

While in town, make sure to visit the Casa de Hidalgo Museum, where you’ll learn more about the independence movement and the life of Father Hidalgo.

The Plaza Principal is a lovely place to relax and people-watch, with its historic buildings like the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores surrounding it.

Lunch and Dessert in Dolores Hidalgo

For lunch, enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine at one of Dolores Hidalgo’s charming restaurants like El Fruty or Da Monica.

Afterward, treat yourself to a unique dessert: the town’s famous nieves (traditional ice creams).

You’ll find unusual flavors like tequila, mole, and avocado, making it a must-try experience. For the best options, I recommend stopping by Helados Los Garcas or Helados Finos La Flor de Dolores.

After exploring, you can return to San Miguel de Allende for a relaxed evening or a final rooftop drink before heading home.

Festivals and Events

San Miguel is even more lively during its numerous festivals and cultural events.

Some of the highlights include the Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato (GIFF), one of the most prestigious film festivals in Latin America, and the Festival de Música de Cámara, a yearly event featuring some of the best chamber music performances.

You can also catch the Fiesta de San Miguel Arcángel in September, where the city celebrates its patron saint with parades, dances, and fireworks.

And don’t forget the Independence Day celebrations on September 16th, as San Miguel played a key role in Mexico’s independence movement.

Staying Comfortable While Exploring

The city enjoys pleasant weather most of the year, but the period from November to February is especially comfortable with cooler evenings.

The rainy season from June to September typically brings afternoon showers, though they rarely affect your plans.

Bring comfortable shoes as the cobblestone streets, while charming, can be tricky to navigate.

Be prepared for varying weather as well—pack a light jacket for cooler mornings and evenings, and don’t forget sunscreen for the midday sun, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors at places like El Charco del Ingenio or the vineyards.
