Hotels in the Center of Holbox

Staying in the center of Holbox has several advantages. The restaurants, cafes, and beach clubs are mainly located in the center of the island, so if you stay in one of the remote areas (Punta Mosquito, Punta Cocos), you will need to travel by golf cart or bicycle.

It’s very convenient on an island that is sometimes flooded, limiting mobility!

The downside is that the center can be potentially noisier at night. Personally, I stayed at Hotel Siesta Holbox during my last visit to Holbox and I had no problems, as it is very well situated.

Staying in the center of Holbox also means you’re close to the starting points for wonderful tours, like swimming with whale sharks (click here to find out more!) or the three-island boat tour.

Another advantage is being close to the ferry, making it not only cheaper to get there, but also quicker, which is ideal if you want to enjoy the island until the last minute before leaving.

However, if you’re looking for a more intimate and relaxing atmosphere, more faithful to the authentic image of Holbox, I would recommend choosing a hotel near Punta Cocos or Punta Mosquito, away from the hustle and bustle.

Hotels Near Punta Cocos

Punta Cocos is the westernmost point of Holbox Island, situated 2 km from the town center.

Easily accessible by foot, bike, golf cart, or taxi, except during floods.

Although there are a few beach clubs, it’s a very tranquil spot, perfect for those who want to relax away from the crowds. It’s the ideal choice for a romantic getaway in Holbox!

Punta Cocos is famous for its beautiful beach and especially for the spectacular natural phenomenon of bioluminescence, best observed from June to September during a night tour. –Book your bioluminescence tour here!

Here, you can stroll along the famous stretch of fine sand featured in many photographs, surrounded by shallow and crystal-clear waters.

Furthermore, you’ll have the opportunity to observe flamingos, pelicans, rays, and tropical fish.

As walking on this sand bank is one of the top activities in Holbox, staying near Punta Mosquito gives you a great advantage: you can access this stunning location before the crowds arrive.

And for early risers, the sunrise here is magical, featuring shades of orange that reflect in the calm water. It’s definitely worth setting your alarm for.

Budget-Friendly Hotels in Holbox

Let’s face it: Holbox is not one of the cheapest destinations in Mexico. It’s partly because it’s a tourist hotspot, but also simply because it’s an island!

However, you can enjoy a budget-friendly stay in Holbox by following these tips:

• Transportation: the cheapest way to get to Holbox is by taking the ADO bus to Chiquila. There are departures from Cancún and Mérida. Book your tickets in advance on the ADO website.
• Low-cost hotels in Holbox: there are great hostels and affordable hotels in Holbox. I recommend choosing one that comes with a kitchen, so you can save on meals!
• Eating on a budget in Holbox: head to the Holbox Municipal Market, where you can also buy fruits and vegetables. There are also local eateries offering great value for money in Holbox, such as Antojitos Norma, Antojitos La Sirenita, and Antojitos Kanasin.
• Avoid beach clubs: you can absolutely sit on the sand for free, as long as you don’t use the facilities of the beach clubs. Just bring a towel and water, and you’re set! Note that there are more shaded areas near Punta Cocos.
• Free activities: admire the colorful street art murals and stroll along the sandbar at Punta Mosquito. It is said that you can witness the bioluminescence effect from Punta Cocos beach, without having to book a tour (click here for more info!). In my experience, that’s not quite the case, but you can always give it a try 😉

Family-Friendly Hotels in Holbox

Many families choose to stay in Holbox during their trip to Mexico, as it offers a peaceful alternative to the busier destinations of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

The island features fine sandy beaches with shallow, calm waters that even the youngest children can safely enjoy.

Families in Holbox can easily rent bikes or, for added convenience, a golf cart to get around.

There are also plenty of activities for the whole family, such as the must-do three-island boat tour (click here to book!).

But, in my opinion, the best family experience in Holbox is swimming with whale sharks (more information here!), the largest fish in the world. You’ll also get the chance to snorkel in crystal-clear waters, among dolphins and rays.

Holbox is a beautiful island, but like the Riviera Maya, it faces the recurring problem of sargassum, the seaweed that invades the coast.

Hoteliers don’t clean the beaches, so if you encounter seaweed during your stay in Holbox, you’ll be thankful to have access to a pool to cool off!

Best Hotels in Holbox with Good Wi-Fi for Digital Nomads

If you’re a digital nomad looking for the best hotels in Holbox, be aware that the weather can greatly affect your Wi-Fi connection.

Holbox is stunning, but in case of heavy rains, flooding is common, as well as power outages, which can lead to internet interruptions.

From my experience, there isn’t really a reliable internet network in Holbox, or even in Chiquila (the port).

If you have an important call or need a solid connection, you might want to plan your visit for another time or consider changing destinations.

However, from my experience, Café Copal at Zomay Holbox offers the island’s best Wi-Fi, and Hotel Boutique Naj Casa Holbox also had very good Wi-Fi during my stay.
